THE 2007 FALL PLEDGE DRIVE

Thousands of you listen to ClassX; how many of you have actually contributed to us?

So why do we do it, the fall pledge drive, that is?  Let us educate you.  Class
X is what is known as a public community radio station. The reality of being a Public Community Station is that the FCC restricts us and limits us on our methods of raising operating capitol.  We are limited to business sponsorships, grants and listener support.  Simply put, we rely on donations in order to survive.  If we are unable to raise enough financial support from our listeners, ClassX will go silent.

We are comprised of volunteers (almost two dozen of them).  That's right, no one gets paid.  But we would like to change that.  In order to grow, ClassX needs the income to be able to hire a few key staff members who can help us do more.  Yeah we wish we could have become a commercial station (they are located on channels above 91.9 on the dial), but we couldn't.  We simply didn't have an extra $18 million lying around (that's what the last one sold for in the Cincinnati market).  Not to mention that there are simply no new frequencies left in Cincinnati.  With that said, it came down to either leaving the boring Cincinnati radio dial as it is or taking the option of applying for 88.9 at the FCC and giving the Tri-State a completely fresh and new format that the Tri-State has not experienced in over 20 years. Having it non-commercial, it is better than not having it at all, right?  So we bit the bullet and went for it back in 1999.  After an 8-year wait and difficulty beyond belief that you don't want to hear about, we were finally granted the License to build and operate WMWX (and WRHX 107.9 in Richwood, KY, 97.7 in Walton, KY).  We are thrilled that you have accepted us and love us.  We know you do because we get your calls and emails every single day.  For that we cannot thank you enough.

Back to the pledge drive.  This is something that we must do in order to survive.  That is, rely on you to place your membership with the station and pledge to provide $5, $10, $15, $20, $25 (or more) per month to Class
X.   Besides needing a staff, ClassX has heard your cries for us to expand and bring our signal into areas that are not being covered well.  We have begun looking into it and we are working at accomplishing this goal.  This requires a great deal of time and money.  Lawyers need to be paid, engineers need to be hired and antennas, transmitters, tons of equipment and other items will need to be purchased.  Not to mention advertising, office supplies, tower space rent, payments on our current broadcast equipment and many, many more expenses.  In addition, new channels will need to be found.  All of this costs a great deal of money.  How bad do you want it?  Become a member of ClassX and help us grow and expand.

If those are not reasons enough to become a member of Class
X let us give you more.....
We wanted to bring our Fresh Album rock format to the Tri-State to please your ears but it doesn't stop there.  We also want to be a big part of your life.  We want to become a part of the community and your family.  We are currently working on projects that will bring toys to Tri-State children in time for Christmas
. We are helping local non-profits such as the Hamilton County Fair, who has been struggling over the past several years to survive.  To help them we performed 4 days of live broadcasts from the fair and promoted it for free.  We have heard from local musicians and we have responded.  We know that no other stations will play their music and that really bugs us.  So we do it.  Not only do we play it, we put it in our hot current daily music rotations and play it for up to 15 weeks everyday, if it is something we think others will like.  We've already done it for local bands like Noctaluka from Cincinnati, Rick Reynolds from Miamitown, Captain Goo & The Yee Yee's from Batesville, Bob Cushing from Cincinnati and Kristen Key from Cincinnati just to name a few.  We are working to network ClassX to other markets so that other people can experience good radio for a change.  We have our Live Feed on the Internet to make it easy for you to enjoy us while you are at work and we know that you do.  We have hundreds of Internet listeners.  We've heard from many listeners who used to purchase satellite radio services because they could not stand the local stations, but don't anymore since we came along.  Why not pledge that $10 per month to us.  Listen during the pledge drive and be sure to call in to pledge your membership.  Don't rely on someone else to do it; they won’t because, guess what? They are relying on you to do it.  It's a vicious circle and it doesn't work.  Without your important contributions ClassX will not be able to advance and grow to give you more of what you have asked for.   Bottom line, ClassX cannot continue without your pledges.  If you listen to us, if you make requests from our website, if you enjoy our programming we ask you to help us during this pledge drive.  You support other local stations, why not us?

One last thing.  If you don't plan on supporting Class
X can you let us know why?  Can you let us know what we could do to make it desirable for you to change your mind to become a member of ClassX

Are you a business?  Can you donate items to Class
X that we can use to raise funds?  All contributions are tax deductible.  Contact us ASAP and we will make arrangements to drop by and pick up what you have to donate.

Thanks to all for your consideration and above all thanks for welcoming us into your community and your hearts.

BREAKING NEWS - WEB RADIO WON?

At 7/12/2007's Congressional hearing about the new rates for online radio that would essentially destroy it, SoundExchange made a startling statement.
The SoundExchange executives promised, in front of Congress, that SoundExchange will not enforce the new royalty rates.  Webcasters will stay online, as new rates are hammered out.  More HERE.

CLASSX SILENCED IT'S WEBSTREAMS ON 06-27-2007

It was our wake-up call and plea to our listeners for their help.  If new Copyright rates are allowed to go into effect on July 15, 2007 our stream will be taken down.  Only you can prevent this from happening.  Write your congress rep TODAY!  More info HERE

ClassX Webstream Might Be Forced Off The Web If You Don't Help!  Please Read and then Sign The Petition!

By now we hope that you have enjoyed our webstream.  We sure have!  Please take a few minutes to read this Paradise Radio article for a full explanation of how new web broadcast copyright royalty rates will certainly force us to drop our stream.  After reading the article please SIGN the online PETITION to make our Congress wake up and change these rules.  Here is another RAIN NEWSLETTER you can read for more information on what the ClassX webstream is facing.

OK, so you want a plain English translation?  The new rules will force Class
X to pay an absolute minimum of  $500 per month in royalty fees.  So why is this a problem?  ClassX is a non commercial radio station owned and operated by a local non-profit corporation.  We simply can not afford these rates in addition to the $2000 per year that we already pay ASCAP, BMI & SESAC licensing agencies.  Not to mention our ISP who hosts our audio stream and what we pay them.  Then there are the new record keeping requirements where we would have to keep track of EVERY SINGLE SONG that we play and report it to Sound Exchange.  That's another salary to pay for record keeping.  It simply does not make any sense.

It all comes down to greed and lack of good judgment.  Without radio the music would not get any exposure, CD & download sales would plummet, songwriters and performers would not get paid, radio stations will shut down and the music industry would more than likely cease to exist as we know it.  Aren't the songwriters and and performers already getting paid enough?  What do you think?
